Chye Seng Huat Hardware (CSHH) sounds and looks like an unconventional coffee shop, but is part of Singapore’s long history of reinventing its limited living space.
CSHH Coffee used to be a hardware store and remains the traditional aesthetics, but stepping inside, it’s a very pretty shop with delicious coffee. Not only are there fancy coffee gadgets, but you can purchase coffee and gadgets at The Annex, watch coffee being roasted at The Roastery, and learn more about coffee making and roasting at C-Platform.
The hot coffee is delicious but I think their cold coffee can be rather acidic. They also have interesting beers and coffees on tap – something I’m trying for my next happy hour! I’ve heard brunch here is excellent, but haven’t had a chance to try it yet (sorry been too consumed with Singaporean hawker food for Americanized brunch!). On a nice Singaporean day (aka high-80s), it’s nice to sit outside but the inside has a neat art deco vibe.
Chye Seng Huat Hardware (再成發五金) translates to “fluorish again” hardware and it’s very impressive how they have given new life to an old hardware store. There’s a very laid back LA vibe here and with the sassy umbrella holder, it’s hard to believe you’re in Singapore. You definitely want to bring your friends here to show them how trendy you are!
Chye Seng Huat Hardware has great food and drinks and an extensive beer selection during happy hour
Address: 150 Tyrwhitt Road*
*Word of warning: it does not look like a coffee shop. If you feel uncomfortable because you feel like you’re walking into a residential building, you’re probably in the right spot
